Welcome to the family history of the Bulpitt and allied families - Rogers, Newell, Brennan, Jackson,
Baxter, Poulter, Longlands, West and Read.
Our branch of Bulpitts resided in South London (mainly
in Bermondsey, Southwark and Lambeth) for at least 4 generations, until we dispersed around southern
England.
Our somewhat unusual surname appears to have originated in Hampshire and is still
most common there, however I have not been able to establish a definite connection with that area for
our branch. The spelling of the surname exists in all permutations - Bulpit, Bulpitt, Bullpit, Bullpitt
- at different times and on various records. I have concluded that these variations in spelling are
not significant - before my grandparent's generation, most ancestors appear to have been illiterate
so it is unlikely that they would have been aware of how many 'l's and 't's there should be in their
surname. I have stuck to the 'Bulpitt' version throughout.
